Mexico City to Fund 18 Million-Peso Rehab of Taxqueña Explosion-Damaged Building Starting in March

Officials plan a code-compliant structural overhaul with residents housed temporarily during the work.

Overview

  • The city government will finance and manage the rehabilitation of the Paseos de Taxqueña apartment block at an estimated cost of 18 million pesos.
  • Construction is slated to begin in March and is expected to run six to eight months on a building declared uninhabitable after the Jan. 9 gas blast.
  • Authorities say the project will follow current, stricter regulations and include foundation and structural reinforcements defined by the executive technical plan.
  • The Institute for the Security of Constructions ruled repair feasible rather than demolition, and emergency shoring has been installed to prevent collapse risks.
  • Displaced families are receiving hotel lodging and will get rental aid during the works, with officials reporting either 24 or 25 households covered, and the city has launched the “El detector que te salva” gas-detector safety initiative.
