Mexico City to Enforce Three-Way Household Waste Separation Starting Jan. 1

Color-coded bins roll out with house-to-house outreach in Azcapotzalco to prepare residents for fixed pickup days.

Overview

  • Residents must sort organics, recyclables and non-recyclables into green, gray and orange containers under a fixed schedule that collects organics on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the other two streams on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
  • Bulky items are accepted on Sundays, and recyclables and non-recyclables must be handed over in separate bags.
  • Collection crews, environmental educators and Pilares facilitators have been trained, and three containers per household are being distributed as the casa por casa campaign begins in Azcapotzalco.
  • City officials warn that improperly separated trash may not be collected, with targets of recovering up to 75% of waste and transforming at least 50% by 2030.
  • Reported baseline waste volumes conflict across official statements, with several reports citing about 8,500 tonnes per day and the AGIR director mentioning roughly 12,500.
