Mexico City Stages Día de Muertos Parade Today With Security and Transit Changes

Recognized by UNESCO, the tradition has evolved into a civic spectacle that reshapes Mexico City’s public life.

Overview

  • The Gran Desfile begins at 2 p.m. on Nov. 1, running from Puerta de los Leones along Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juárez, Eje Central and 5 de Mayo to the Zócalo.
  • Authorities activated a special SSC-CDMX operation with road closures, possible closure of Metro Zócalo/Tenochtitlan, Metrobús adjustments on Lines 1, 3, 4 and 7, and suggested alternates including Circuito Interior and Eje 1 Norte.
  • Organizers list two giant skull marionettes, 20 decorated cars with catrinas, 18 stilt-walkers, a large trajinera float and monumental alebrijes among the parade features.
  • The Mega Ofrenda in the Zócalo remains open through Nov. 2 and will be dismantled afterward, as part of a time-limited program of seasonal installations.
  • Mexican communities in the U.S. continue celebrations with large public displays such as Times Square events and San Antonio’s Spirit Season, though Long Beach canceled its parade citing immigration-related security concerns.
