Mexico City Sets September Quake Commemoration and Readiness Plan, With Sept. 19 National Drill

City leaders frame the month as a mix of tributes with hands-on preparedness steps.

Overview

  • The schedule includes a first-ever mass first-aid and CPR class on September 18 at the Monumento a la Revolución, led by the local Health Secretariat with expected participation of more than 2,500 people.
  • The Segundo Simulacro Nacional will take place on September 19 at 12:00, with scenarios along Paseo de la Reforma and exercises across all alcaldías, and roughly 12,000 buildings registered via preparado.gob.mx.
  • Authorities will distribute 3,500 ‘mochilas de vida’ to residents of housing units, with first-aid supplies, hygiene items, a whistle, a flashlight, a USB for scanned documents and a medical data card, plus versions for children and pets.
  • On September 22 the government will present a Program of Intervention for Buildings Vulnerable to Earthquakes and begin demolishing a building damaged in both 1985 and 2017.
  • Throughout September, cultural and memorial events will honor victims and rescuers, including a tribute to the costureras of Colonia Obrera and a ‘Luz en la ausencia’ ceremony at Tlatelolco, alongside reminders of the city’s seismic alert, monitoring systems and about 27,800 loudspeakers.
