Mexico City Sets Nov. 23 to Close Measles Outbreak After Seven Weeks Without New Cases

City officials credit aggressive vaccination alongside targeted sweeps for containing transmission.

Overview

  • Authorities say the capital registered six measles cases in 2025, none severe, with all patients recovered.
  • Contact tracing included 25-block geographic sweeps around each case’s home, workplace and school, and detected no onward spread.
  • More than 632,000 vaccine doses were administered across schools, health centers, hospitals, street kiosks, Metro stations, bus terminals and airports.
  • National surveillance reports 5,119 confirmed cases and 23 deaths through Oct. 30, with Chihuahua the most affected state.
  • The city created a Public Health Command to coordinate responses and tourist health services, which will also operate during the 2026 World Cup.
