Mexico City Sets Nov. 16 Target for Full Reopening of Metro Line 1

Safety approval by Siemens with SGS verification will determine whether the final JuanacatlánObservatorio segment can open as planned.

Overview

  • Mayor Clara Brugada inspected Juanacatlán, Tacubaya and Observatorio and said the system could resume end-to-end service on November 16 if tests succeed.
  • Officials said only the western segment remains shut while technical trials and formal safety certification proceed before riders are allowed back.
  • Project leaders estimate current use at about 700,000 daily trips, rising by roughly 150,000 after the final segment opens, with the Tren Insurgente link projected to add around 35,000 more.
  • Authorities noted that external factors tied to Observatorio connections, including the Interurbano México–Toluca project and a future Line 12 link, could still affect the schedule.
  • The modernization includes 39 trains—29 new units with onboard CCTV—and a comprehensive systems overhaul funded within a 37‑billion‑peso program.
