Mexico City Sets Jan. 2026 Start for Citywide Three‑Stream Waste Pickup Under New Agency

The plan aims to process half of the city’s trash via new collection rules with expanded treatment capacity.

Overview

  • The government formally installed the Agencia de Gestión Integral de Residuos (AGIR), chaired by Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada with environment chief Julia Álvarez Icaza as technical secretary.
  • The program adopts three categories—organic, recyclable inorganics, and non‑recyclable inorganics—with a fixed weekly pickup calendar to avoid on‑route mixing.
  • Collection is scheduled as organics on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; recyclable inorganics on Mondays and Wednesdays; and non‑recyclables on Fridays and Sundays.
  • The city will co‑invest 250 million pesos in collection vehicles, matching alcaldías’ purchases; 34 units have been bought by boroughs and the city will add 34 more this year.
  • Officials target transforming 50% of waste through new or upgraded plants, including modernization at Bordo Poniente, alongside a mass communications and education push, while sanctions for noncompliance were not specified.
