Mexico City Selected to Host World Social Security Forum 2028

Mexico will use the gathering to showcase recent expansions in coverage across its social security system.

Overview

  • The Mexican Embassy in Malaysia confirmed the handover naming Mexico City as the 2028 host, and the International Social Security Association expressed gratitude to Mexico and the IMSS.
  • IMSS director Zoé Robledo presented the bid during WSSF 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, reporting a positive reception and the start of negotiations at the event.
  • The 2025 forum convened more than 1,500 participants from 130 countries, highlighting the scale of the platform Mexico will host in 2028.
  • IMSS framed the selection around reforms since 2018, citing a 135% real increase in the minimum wage and a universal pension of 6,200 pesos every two months for people aged 65 and older.
  • Operational figures highlighted by IMSS include 3 million workers moved to mandatory coverage after the 2021 subcontracting reform, 1.3 million platform workers insured, and over 1 million self-employed enrolled with 800,000 beneficiaries, including 15,000 from the United States, as well as the Salud Casa por Casa program targeting 11 million households.
