Mexico City Seals Pact to Complete 2017 Quake Housing Reconstruction by Mid-2026

The agreement commits 3,700 million pesos with signatures from victim collectives, followed by publication in the Gaceta Oficial.

Overview

  • Clara Brugada signed the Acuerdo General on September 19 with representatives of affected collectives during the earthquake anniversary ceremony.
  • Officials say more than 19,000 homes were already rebuilt or rehabilitated, with the remaining cases slated for completion under the new timetable.
  • The city earmarked 3,500 million pesos for 2025 to accelerate works through year-end and into the first quarter of next year.
  • The pact sets four commitments: guarantee the right to housing, deliver integral and dignified reconstruction, promote a sustainable urban model free of real-estate corruption, and finish by the first half of 2026 with limited exceptions not dependent on the city government.
  • Brugada framed the plan as a public-investment approach replacing pre-2018 credit proposals and cited prosecutions for alleged fund diversion as context for earlier delays.
