Mexico City Says CJNG-Linked Cell Behind Plaza Miyana Killing Dismantled

Officials credit months of coordinated, multi-jurisdictional policing.

Overview

  • SSC chief Pablo Vázquez told the CDMX Congress on Oct. 29 that the group tied to the Dec. 4, 2024 killing of music promoter Jesús Pérez Alvear has been broken up.
  • Six suspects were detained or had arrest warrants executed between Apr. 5 and Oct. 20, including the alleged material attacker and suspected intellectual authors.
  • Operations spanned Iztacalco, Michoacán, Mexico City and Chimalhuacán with participation from the FGJCDMX, SSPC, SEMAR, National Guard, FGR, CNI and state authorities.
  • Those named by authorities include Wenceslao Palacios Ruiz; Lennin Cristopher Rodríguez Ruiz; Cielo Guadalupe Abundez González; Alejandro Gutiérrez Herrera, known as “Tío Pelón”; Jaime Omar Castillo Martínez; and Edson Arturo Barajas Galindo, known as “Randal.”
  • Officials say the suspects belong to a CJNG faction engaged in organized crime; Pérez Alvear was shot inside El Bajío at Plaza Miyana and had been designated by the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC for ties to CJNG and Los Cuinis.
