Mexico City Reports Rain Surge, Reservoirs Above 90% as Drainage 'Mega Desazolve' Scheduled for Early 2026

Officials credit new equipment with faster flood response, improving the supply outlook.

Overview

  • From January 1 to November 15, 2025, the city recorded 1,600 million cubic meters of rainfall, equal to twice the total capacity of the Cutzamala reservoirs.
  • Segiagua reports the main supply sources now exceed 90% capacity, positioning the capital for a stronger buffer during the dry season.
  • The government purchased 40 hydropneumatic units for 1,500 million pesos, described as the largest such investment in roughly 40 years.
  • During the 2025 rainy season, authorities addressed 2,014 urban flooding events, mostly resolved within 24 hours through Operativo Tlaloque’s deployment of over 1,100 workers and about 220 machines totaling roughly 8,800 work hours.
  • With the rainy season concluded, Segiagua is preparing a preventive drainage mega desazolve from January to May 2026 on primary corridors such as Insurgentes, Periférico, Paseo de la Reforma, Circuito Interior and Eje Central, alongside ongoing appeals for responsible water use.
