Mexico City Reopens Metro Line 1 After Three-Year Overhaul

Officials now turn to a planned modernization of Line 3.

Overview

  • The final JuanacatlánObservatorio segment reopened on Sunday, restoring full Pantitlán–Observatorio service, with free rides from 1:30 p.m. for the remainder of the day.
  • Authorities report an investment of about 37 billion pesos that replaced track, power and tunnel systems and installed CBTC signaling, a private LTE/fiber network and nearly 6,000 cameras.
  • The line now operates with 39 trains and targets headways of roughly two minutes with an end‑to‑end travel time of about 40 minutes.
  • STC projects daily ridership near 850,000, and the fare remains 5 pesos despite higher estimated per‑trip operating costs.
  • The upgraded Observatorio terminal is set up as a regional node for future integration with the El Insurgente interurban rail, with Chinese supplier CRRC among the project partners.
