Mexico City Region Urged to Skip Fireworks as Inversions Threaten New Year Air Quality

Newly tightened national limits for particles and ozone heighten the emphasis on prevention.

Overview

  • CAMe urged residents across the megalopolis to avoid fireworks, bonfires, chimneys and open burning during New Year celebrations to curb particulate emissions.
  • Cold Front 25 is bringing low temperatures and fog that favor thermal inversions, trapping pollutants and increasing risks for sensitive groups; a fog bank affected AICM early on Dec. 31.
  • CAMe said it may declare an Ambient Air Contingency if particles or ozone rise, which would trigger a double Hoy No Circula traffic restriction.
  • As of now the Jan. 1 program remains unchanged, restricting green-sticker vehicles with plate endings 1 and 2 and holograms 1 and 2, while 0/00 and hybrids are exempt.
  • Mexico’s standards for particles and ozone became stricter on Dec. 26–27, and officials note any reduction in compliant days reflects tighter limits; residents are advised to use monitoring tools and follow health guidance including KN95 use and avoiding vigorous outdoor exercise.
