Mexico City Region to Step Up ‘Hoy No Circula’ Enforcement as Edomex Fines Begin Jan. 1

Drivers face UMA-based fines with possible impoundment starting January 1 in the State of Mexico.

Overview

  • On Tuesday, December 30, vehicles with pink stickers, plates ending in 7 or 8, and verification holograms 1 or 2 are restricted from 5:00 to 22:00 in CDMX and Edomex.
  • State of Mexico officials will launch street operatives on January 1 to detect cars without valid verification, visibly polluting units, or those circulating during restricted periods.
  • Fines in Edomex will be 20 UMAs for violating Hoy No Circula, equivalent to about 2,263 pesos, with separate late-verification penalties of 30 UMAs, about 3,395 pesos, plus possible towing and storage costs.
  • Exempt vehicles include those with holograms 0 and 00, electric and hybrid cars, motorcycles, public transport, emergency and security units, authorized cargo, and vehicles operated with official disability permits.
  • In declared air-quality contingencies, CAMe can expand restrictions through extraordinary bulletins, so motorists are directed to consult the official portal hoynocircula.cdmx.gob.mx for updates.
