Mexico City Raises Concessioned Transit Fares by 1.50 Pesos as Inspections Begin

Enforcement is underway to verify compliance with conditions tied to the fare hike.

Overview

  • Semovi launched inspections at 37 CETRAMs and random checkpoints with support from SSC and Invea to verify visible fare postings and operational standards.
  • The official fares now are: microbuses/vans at 7.50 pesos (up to 5 km), 8.00 (5–12 km) and 9.00 (over 12 km); buses at 8.50 (up to 12 km) and 9.50 (over 12 km); and corridors at 9.50, with a 20% night surcharge from 23:00 to 06:00.
  • Operators must meet safety and service requirements including a visible type C license, civil liability insurance, functioning cameras, GPS and panic buttons, daily vehicle checks and standardized uniforms, alongside adherence to authorized routes and traffic rules.
  • Overcharging carries fines of roughly 5,000 to 60,000 pesos, possible temporary removal of units and, for repeat violations, processes that can lead to suspension or revocation of concessions.
  • Passengers can report improper charges to Semovi via official social channels or Locatel at 55 56 58 11 11, providing the date, time, location, vehicle plates and route to enable enforcement.
