Mexico City Push Targets Food Waste at Markets as FAO Chef Drive Rallies Public

A local move to reinforce food recovery coincides with new visibility campaigns to narrow the gap between massive losses and limited donations.

Overview

  • CDMX lawmaker Pablo Trejo proposed urging the city’s economic development ministry to strengthen food banks and make prevention and recovery systematic in public and itinerant markets not covered by the current voluntary program.
  • Mexico City generates 964 tonnes of food waste daily, with the Central de Abasto producing over 400 tonnes a day and about 60% of that stream classified as organic.
  • Despite the scale, only 28,128 tonnes were donated to public and community kitchens in the capital in 2022, highlighting underused potential for safe food diversion.
  • BAMX reports Mexico discards about 30 million tonnes of food annually, an economic hit it estimates at 2.5% of GDP with emissions comparable to 16 million cars, while the network has recovered more than 180,000 tonnes reaching 2.5 million people.
  • FAO enlisted 11 Latin American chefs for the #SinDesperdicioChallenge to teach waste‑smart cooking, and Fundación Alsea’s Va por mi Cuenta campaign runs through November 30 to bolster food‑bank logistics.
