Mexico City Police Seize Monkey, Caiman and Python Displayed for Photos in Zócalo

A social media tip prompted animal-control action resulting in veterinary care for the seized wildlife.

Overview

  • Two men, ages 38 and 41 and reportedly from Tamaulipas, were detained and referred to the environmental crimes prosecutor FIDAMPU.
  • Officers found the spectacled caiman with its snout bound, the capuchin monkey restrained by a collar and metal leash, and the Burmese python confined in a plastic box.
  • Custody of the three animals was transferred to the Animal Surveillance Brigade, which moved them to its Xochimilco facilities for veterinary evaluation and observation.
  • Authorities say the suspects were charging passersby for photos with the animals, a practice officials emphasize is prohibited by law.
  • City officials urged the public to report street exhibitions of animals and to avoid giving money that sustains mistreatment.
