Mexico City Police Detain 'El Chacal,' Alleged Los Tanzanios Leader in Colonia Doctores

SSC says the detention followed investigative work to dismantle violence-generating groups in eastern Mexico City.

Overview

  • Officers on patrol stopped a gray vehicle with Morelos plates at Doctor Idelfonso Velasco and Doctor Agustín Andrade after seeing a man and a woman handle a bag of suspected marijuana.
  • A search yielded 100 bags of suspected crystal, 196 bags of marijuana, and about 200 grams of marijuana in bulk that were secured as evidence.
  • The detainees, a 52-year-old identified as Juan Manuel García González, alias “El Chacal” or “El Chuki,” and a 44-year-old woman, were presented to the Ministerio Público.
  • Investigators report three prior entries for the male suspect to the Mexico City penitentiary system in 1997, 2005, and 2024 for robbery-related offenses and crimes against health with cartridge possession.
  • Authorities describe Los Tanzanios as a violence-generating group tied to narcomenudeo and extortion operating mainly in Iztapalapa and Cuauhtémoc.
