Mexico City Outlines Tinted-Window Permits and Enforcement With Penalties Up to 30 UMA

The Zacapu crackdown is a municipal campaign, not a national program.

Overview

  • In Mexico City, lateral and rear windows may not reduce visible light below 20%, with exceptions only through a medical permit recorded by the Mobility Secretariat.
  • The CDMX authorization costs about 417 pesos and requires official ID, proof of address, vehicle ownership documents, registration, and a medical certificate from a public health institution.
  • Only Traffic Control Police can issue and sign tickets in the capital, while the Mobility Secretariat, the Security Secretariat and Civic Courts are designated to enforce the rules.
  • Fines in CDMX range from 20 to 30 UMA (approximately 2,262–3,394 pesos), whereas the federal Article 48 penalty for visibility-reducing adhesives is 10–15 UMA, up to about 1,697 pesos.
  • Zacapu, Michoacán has launched a local removal campaign, and drivers elsewhere must verify state or municipal limits, such as Sinaloa’s 35% minimum visibility rule.
