Mexico City Outlaws Housing Bans on Renters and Buyers With Children or Pets

Residents can file complaints with designated city agencies, which can impose fines for discriminatory refusals.

Overview

  • The reform to the Mexico City Housing Law took effect this week following its October 27 publication in the Gaceta Oficial.
  • Article 4 now explicitly includes the phrase “cohabitation with children and sentient beings,” barring denials based on kids or companion animals.
  • The change was approved by the Mexico City Congress and promulgated by Mayor Clara Brugada Molina.
  • SEDUVI, COPRED, the city’s Legal Counsel and Prosoc are identified to receive complaints, supervise compliance and apply sanctions.
  • The law does not remove landlords’ ability to require deposits or reasonable care conditions, but it prohibits conditioning access to housing on family status or pet ownership.
