Mexico City Opens Registration for Handmade Tortilla Contest on Sept. 28

The contest spotlights maize traditions by rewarding manual skill under strict rules.

Overview

  • The event will run from 15:00 to 16:00 at the Monumento a la Revolución as part of the Feria del Maíz y la Agrobiodiversidad 2025.
  • Up to 30 residents from the Suelo de Conservación alcaldías may enter: Xochimilco, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan, Álvaro Obregón, La Magdalena Contreras, Cuajimalpa de Morelos, Iztapalapa and Gustavo A. Madero.
  • Registration is open until Sept. 22 at 18:00 via 55 3792 5149 or nitalefmtz@gmail.com.
  • Competitors must hand-form tortillas on a comal with no presses or machines, aiming to produce the most pieces from 1 kg of nixtamalized masa with a minimum 16 cm diameter and uniform cooking; organizers will supply comales and gas.
  • The contest features three elimination heats leading to a six-person final judged by three experts, with prizes of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 pesos; entrants should arrive with 2 kg of nixtamalized masa.
