Mexico City Opens Its Largest Utopía, La Soberana

The delivery expands free local services, with a planned second phase to add HIV and addiction treatment and youth programs ahead of the World Urban Forum.

Overview

  • The Utopía La Soberana was inaugurated at Deportivo Hermanos Galeana on Sunday by Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada, marking the tenth Utopía in Mexico City.
  • The first stage opened more than 90,000 square meters after an investment of about 300 million pesos and now offers roughly 80 spaces for sports, culture and social services.
  • Onsite facilities include pools (an Olympic and a semi‑Olympic pool), a gym, boxing ring, courts for multiple sports, a 400‑seat auditorium, libraries, creative labs and a circus tent for 800 spectators.
  • The complex provides direct social services such as free childcare for children 45 days to six years, medical consults, clinical labs, mastography and community kitchens that officials say can lower household costs.
  • City officials confirmed a second stage of roughly 100,000 m² that will add a Clínica Condesa for HIV care before December, an IMSS‑Bienestar toxicológico hospital and an Aldea Juvenil, and ONU‑Habitat presented a formal recognition of the Utopías model.
