Mexico City Officials Inspect Child-Centered 'Utopía' in Iztacalco With January 2026 Opening Pledged

The 127,000 m² complex will offer free care, health, sports, culture under the city's Utopías program.

Overview

  • The first 74,000 m² phase is slated to finish construction in December, with inauguration set for January 2026 after today's site visit by the mayor and public works chief.
  • A second phase of about 42,000 m² is scheduled to start later this year, adding the core children-focused components at the Magdalena Mixhuca site in Iztacalco.
  • Planned facilities include a semi‑Olympic pool, a 400‑seat auditorium, outdoor forums, a 360‑degree immersive cinema, robotics labs, a sensory garden, and an urban teaching farm.
  • The complex embeds the Public Care System with a CENDI for infants to age six, public laundries, subsidized dining, rehabilitation and mental health services, and a Centro Colibrí for addictions care.
  • Access to all services will be free, and officials frame the project as reclaiming major public space for families as part of a citywide goal to build 100 Utopías within a 15‑minute reach.
