Mexico City Mobilizes Massive Basilica Operation for 13 Million Guadalupe Pilgrims on Dec. 12

Authorities will staff checkpoints and assistance modules to protect visitors and oversee prices.

Overview

  • The Operativo Basílica deploys about 105,000 public servants, including 5,080 police backed by 255 patrols, 73 motorcycles, drones, 13 ambulances and five ERUM motoambulances.
  • The operation runs Dec. 5–14 across main access routes and the Tepeyac area, with the peak influx expected from Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7:00 to Friday, Dec. 12 at 13:00.
  • Profeco’s on‑site effort from Dec. 10–14 adds four pilgrim help modules and price monitoring for food, flowers and other vendors near the Basilica.
  • Economic forecasts point to at least 21.7 billion pesos in nationwide spending and about 1,724 million pesos in Mexico City, with typical pilgrim outlays of 260–1,800 pesos.
  • The Mañanitas serenade begins at 00:00 on Dec. 12, with TV specials featuring Televisa artists such as Lucero, Carlos Rivera, Edith Márquez and Aída Cuevas, and TV Azteca performers including Tatiana, Denisse de Kalafe and Germán Montero.
