Mexico City Mayor Faces Scrutiny Over Unapproved Removal of Castro and Guevara Statues

Formal complaints filed with the Contraloría General urge the mayor to restore the statues under Mexico City’s inalienable heritage law.

Overview

  • Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega ordered the removal of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara statues from Plaza de San Carlos without approval from the Monuments and Public Art Committee.
  • Mexico City’s Law of Patrimonial Regime and Public Service deems public-domain art inalienable and bars any disposition without committee consent.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the removals as illegal and Morena legislators lodged a formal complaint with the Contraloría General on July 24.
  • Academics, veterans, students and local residents submitted a citizen denunciation demanding the monuments’ reinstatement and framed the issue within global monuments debates.
  • As of July 31 the statues remain offsite pending the Contraloría General’s review, with no decision yet on whether they will be returned.
