Overview
- The Government of Mexico City and the alcaldías of Álvaro Obregón, Magdalena Contreras, Tlalpan and Cuajimalpa formally launched the Plan Integral de Recuperación de Ríos y Barrancas 2025–2030 with defined roles for each secretaría and borough across 1,000 hectares.
- Cleaning crews have begun work in targeted sites, including Río Mixcoac, under teams from Sedema, Segiagua, Obras y Servicios and the four boroughs, aiming to clear all ravines of waste by December 31, 2025.
- The first cohort of “Guardianes de las Barrancas” was sworn in and enrolled in a temporary employment program to patrol the ravines and report illegal dumping, sewage discharges and invasions.
- The plan commits to complete waste removal on 1,000 hectares by year-end and to launch ecological restoration on at least 500 hectares in early 2026, focusing on revegetation, water treatment and infrastructure upgrades.
- A daily restoration cabinet has been established to coordinate operations, liaise with communities and enforce measures that protect the ravines’ roles in flood control, aquifer recharge and biodiversity.
