Mexico City Launches Estadio Azteca Area Overhaul for 2026 World Cup

Officials cast the works as part of a citywide World Cup plan promising lasting mobility upgrades, including a doubled Tren Ligero fleet.

Overview

  • Four simultaneous projects are underway: a full CETRAM Huipulco rehab, upgrades to the Estadio Azteca pedestrian bridge with elevators and new lighting, reinforcement of the Circuito Azteca vehicular bridge, and a new Huipulco market.
  • The new market will have 90 stalls and parking for 165 bicycles, with local vendors set to relocate from surrounding walkways as part of a reorganization of street commerce.
  • City leaders say more than 30 World Cup–related projects are in progress across the capital, with up to 6 billion pesos expected for works in water, streets, and mobility, and completion targeted before June 2026.
  • The CETRAM overhaul spans over 16,000 square meters, and bridge works include resurfacing 5,600 square meters of roadway plus 950 square meters of widened sidewalks and improved illumination.
  • The stadium remodel remains largely undisclosed by venue authorities as social-media videos of interior progress were pulled, and a worker who posted clips says HR told him to stop before he was later dismissed with full severance.
