Mexico City Keeps Metro Villa‑Basílica Open as Metrobús Closes Select Stops for Pilgrimage

Authorities are using controlled Metro access, targeted Metrobús suspensions, on‑site support to manage the Guadalupe pilgrimage.

Overview

  • The STC will keep Villa‑Basílica station on Line 6 open on Dec. 11–12 under Operativo Basílica 2025, an exceptional move after years of closing the stop during peak pilgrim flows.
  • Metro’s plan includes crowd dosing at entries, increased train dispatch, first‑aid coverage, mint‑vest user‑assistance brigades, and a reported 300% boost in police presence near the Basilica.
  • Metrobús is suspending service near the shrine: Line 6 stations La Villa, De los Misterios, Hospital Infantil La Villa and Gustavo A. Madero, and Line 7 stations Indios Verdes, Hospital Infantil La Villa, De los Misterios, Gustavo A. Madero and Garrido, with adjustments starting at 04:30 on Dec. 11 and service in affected segments set to resume after 18:00 on Dec. 12.
  • The Guardia Nacional deployed 421 personnel with 221 vehicles on federal highways from Dec. 6–15 and 360 personnel around the Basilica from Dec. 11–13 to support safety and traffic control.
  • Local governments report heavy pilgrim movement, including more than 40,000 transiting Texcoco by Dec. 10, as the city’s Plan Basílica runs through Dec. 14 with preparations for over 13 million visitors this season.
