Mexico City Issues Wind and Rain Alerts as Storms Flood Roads, Slow Metro

Forecast totals of up to 75 mm sustain a high risk of flooding.

Overview

  • SGIRPC activated a double preventive wind alert valid until 21:00, with Orange for Iztacalco on rashes of 60–69 km/h and Yellow for Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa and Venustiano Carranza on winds of 50–59 km/h.
  • Protection Civil updated a Yellow alert for persistent rain and possible hail through Friday night into early Saturday across multiple alcaldías including Azcapotzalco, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc and others.
  • SMN projected city rainfall accumulations between 50 and 75 millimeters, maintaining the potential for significant ponding and localized inundations.
  • Heavy downpours produced encharcamientos up to 20 cm with water mirrors of 200–500 meters, including up to 45 cm reported in Fuentes del Pedregal and closures near Calzada de Tlalpan and Picacho-Ajusco.
  • Authorities closed affected stretches to traffic and the Metro applied marcha de seguridad on Lines 2, 8, A and 12, while Bomberos and crews pumped water, cleared drains and urged residents to secure loose objects and avoid flooded areas.
