Mexico City Ends Ozone Alert, Restores Normal Saturday Hoy No Circula

Forecasts indicate better pollutant dispersion with the high-pressure system moving away.

Overview

  • The environmental commission CAME lifted the Phase 1 ozone contingency at 18:00 Friday after ozone levels fell into compliance following improved conditions from about 14:00.
  • For the second Saturday of the month, normal restrictions apply to Holograma 1 vehicles with even plate endings, all Holograma 2 vehicles, and foreign-plated cars from 05:00 to 22:00.
  • The Hoy No Circula program covers all Mexico City boroughs and 18 adjoining State of Mexico municipalities, and it also applies in the metropolitan areas of Toluca and Santiago Tianguistenco.
  • Authorities issued 341 sanctions during the contingency: 325 for driving during restricted periods, one for missing verification, and 15 for visible excessive emissions, and they removed 258 out-of-state plates as a precaution.
  • The brief episode followed a 160 ppb ozone peak at Cuajimalpa at 16:00 Thursday, and officials say they will continue monitoring air quality as dispersion improves.
