Mexico City Electric-Transit Strike Deferred to Feb. 4 as Union, Officials Open Formal Talks

Workers granted a short extension following a meeting with Mobility officials to secure concrete, budget-backed proposals.

Overview

  • The Alianza de Tranviarios de México voted to move its strike date to 00:00 on February 4, 2026 after talks with SEMOVI chief Héctor Ulises García Nieto, with service continuing during the extension.
  • The union conditioned the delay on immediate installation of formal negotiation tables that include the city’s Finance Secretariat to ensure any offer has clear budget support.
  • A majority of the workers’ assembly approved the prórroga and the new date was filed with the Labor Tribunal; the next bargaining session was scheduled for January 21 at 13:30.
  • The central demand is a 10% raise on top of the federal increase to repair eroded salary tabulators, alongside calls for full uniforms, adequate protective equipment, tools and compliance with the collective agreement.
  • Any stoppage would suspend Trolebús, Cablebús and Tren Ligero used by hundreds of thousands daily, and the union represents roughly 2,600 to 2,700 workers who operate these systems.
