Mexico City Detains Alleged Tren de Aragua Leader ‘Nelson’ Linked to Feminicides

A joint federal–Mexico City operation tracked the suspect across several states before the arrest.

Overview

  • Omar García Harfuch announced the capture of Nelson Arturo Echezuria Alcántara, identified by authorities as the group’s principal operator in Mexico and considered the intellectual author of several femicides.
  • Two Venezuelan associates, Lucas Alberto Vielma Rojas, 37, and Marcos Gabriel Ortega Sotillo, 36, were detained alongside him in Mexico City.
  • Officers seized 92 doses of marijuana, 44 doses of “cristal,” 18 doses of “piedra,” two cellphones and cash during the inspection.
  • The detainees have outstanding arrest warrants for human trafficking and organized crime, and Echezuria faces additional warrants for drug offenses and criminal association.
  • Authorities say the group operated in Puebla, Morelos, Estado de México and several Mexico City boroughs, and the suspects were turned over to the public ministry as the investigation continues.
