Mexico City Details September Quake Commemoration With Drill, Mass Training and Building Intervention

City leaders say remembrance will be matched by concrete preparedness, including a widely subscribed Sept. 19 drill.

Overview

  • The Second National Drill is set for Sept. 19 at 12:00 with main response scenarios on Paseo de la Reforma at Juárez and at Reforma 222, alongside exercises in all boroughs.
  • A mass first-aid and CPR class led by the local Health Secretariat will take place Sept. 18 at the Monumento a la Revolución, targeting participation of more than 2,500 people.
  • Authorities reported nearly 12,000 buildings registered for the drill via preparado.gob.mx, reflecting broad public and institutional participation.
  • On Sept. 22 the city will present its Program of Intervention for Buildings Vulnerable to Earthquakes, beginning demolition that same day on at least one affected structure.
  • The month-long, 14-event program pairs prevention steps—distribution of 3,500 emergency 'mochilas de vida'—with cultural tributes including a photo exhibition, a homage to 1985 costureras in Colonia Obrera and a ceremony in Tlatelolco.
