Sheinbaum argues that the U.S. lacks the legal authority to rename the entire Gulf, citing international law under the Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which limits sovereignty to 12 nautical miles from a nation’s coastline.
Google confirmed that U.S. users will see the name 'Gulf of America,' while Mexican users will still see 'Gulf of Mexico,' and global users will see both names displayed.
Sheinbaum humorously proposed renaming North America as 'Mexican America' in response, referencing a 1607 map that used the term.
