Mexico Captures Alleged CJNG Operator 'El Chalamán' in Colima as U.S. Seeks Extradition

An interagency intelligence effort produced a provisional arrest with a view to U.S. drug charges.

Overview

  • Authorities detained José Luis Sánchez Valencia, known as “El Chalamán,” around 8:30 a.m. on August 23 near Avenida Benito Juárez in the ColimaVilla de Álvarez area, according to the national detention registry.
  • The operation followed surveillance that identified his movements and was carried out by SSPC, Semar, Sedena, the National Guard, FGR, the AIC and the National Intelligence Center.
  • Officials identify him as a principal operator for the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación and report that he is a relative of leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes.
  • A provisional arrest warrant with a view to extradition was executed for narcotics offenses and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and precursors in the United States.
  • He remains in federal custody in Mexico as authorities initiate the extradition process.
