Mexico Braces for Widespread Heavy Rains as Depression Trece‑E Nears Tropical‑Storm Strength

Forecasters attribute the risk to the interaction of a Pacific depression, the Mexican monsoon, tropical waves, upper troughs.

Overview

  • SMN forecasts that Trece‑E will strengthen to Tropical Storm Mario offshore near Guerrero and Michoacán, bringing very strong rains to Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero with gusts up to 70 km/h and waves of 3.0–4.0 meters.
  • Intense rainfall is expected in Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, with additional very strong totals in Puebla, while central states face scattered strong storms.
  • The Mexican monsoon will drive storms in the northwest and north, with Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa and Nayarit under risk for heavy showers, lightning and localized hail.
  • State agencies, including Protección Civil Sonora, have issued alerts, warning of urban flooding, rising rivers and arroyos, landslides, reduced visibility, downed trees and dangerous marine conditions such as possible trombas.
  • From Friday through Sunday, the developing cyclone is forecast to track west‑northwest offshore, maintaining high surf along Pacific coasts from Guerrero to Jalisco and prolonging stormy conditions across multiple regions.
