Mexico Braces for Cold Front 25 With Arctic Air, Torrential Rains and Powerful Norte Winds

An Arctic air mass will drive a sharp temperature drop across the country.

Overview

  • SMN/CONAGUA forecasts the front entering from the north and northeast between December 28 and 29 before moving along the Gulf coast on Monday.
  • Intense to torrential rainfall is expected in Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas, raising the risk of flooding and landslides from December 29 to 31.
  • Minimum temperatures are projected at -10 to -5 °C in mountain zones of Baja California, Chihuahua and Durango, with -5 to 0 °C and frost in other highland states.
  • Snow or sleet is probable in northern mountainous areas, particularly the north of Chihuahua, with additional cold conditions spreading across northern and central regions.
  • A very strong Norte could bring coastal gusts up to about 100 km/h on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz and across the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and Tabasco authorities have issued a yellow alert.
