Mexico Births Fall Again in 2024 as INEGI Reports Steeper Decline and Stark Regional Gaps

New figures point to widening disparities in reproductive and maternal health access across states.

  • INEGI’s ENR 2024 logged 1,672,227 births, a national rate of 47.7 per 1,000 women, down 4.5 points from 2023.
  • Chiapas posted the highest birth rate at 86.7 per 1,000 women, followed by Durango (58.9) and Nayarit (58.6).
  • The lowest rates were in Mexico City at 32.8 per 1,000 women, with Yucatán at 38.1 and Hidalgo at 38.3.
  • Adolescent fertility totaled 89,527 births to girls aged 10–17, a national rate of 10.1 per 1,000, with Chiapas highest at 19.4 and Mexico City lowest at 5.2.
  • Most births occurred in medical facilities nationwide (86.96%), contrasting with Chiapas where only 40.83% were in hospitals or clinics and many occurred at home.
