Mexico Begins Distribution of 466 Million Pesos in FAISPIAM Funds to 364 Indigenous and Afromexican Communities

The operation follows a constitutional reform securing 10 percent of the social infrastructure fund for local self-governed communities

Overview

  • The Secretaría de Bienestar issued Banco del Bienestar cards loaded with 466.259 million pesos to 364 Michoacán communities under the FAISPIAM program today.
  • A July 18 amendment to Article 2 of the constitution permanently enshrined FAISPIAM as a federal fund dedicated to indigenous and Afromexican social infrastructure.
  • Beneficiary communities will use their cards to democratically allocate resources for water, drainage, electrification, education, health and housing projects.
  • Legal safeguards under Mexico’s general budget laws ensure FAISPIAM funds retain their federal character and remain subject to federal auditing.
  • Since 2022, the state’s Faeispum program has completed 84 public-service infrastructure works worth 103.4 million pesos in 35 self-governed indigenous communities.
