Mexico Banks to Roll Out User-Set Transfer Caps on Oct. 1 Under New MTU Rule

Banks are introducing app controls that let customers define a maximum for digital transfers before a preset 12,360‑peso limit takes effect.

Overview

  • All banks must enable configuration of the Monto Transaccional del Usuario (MTU) in their apps and online platforms starting October 1, 2025, per the DOF disposition.
  • If a customer does not set a limit, a default cap of 12,360 pesos will apply, and transfers above that threshold can be blocked or require additional authentication.
  • Use of the MTU becomes mandatory for digital and mobile banking customers on January 1, 2026, according to the official notice.
  • Users can choose per‑operation, daily, or monthly limits, and edits or out‑of‑pattern movements may prompt verification via SMS, token, email code, or biometrics.
  • The decree does not establish fines for users, and banks are notifying customers as controls roll out for transfers via SPEI, CoDi, Dimo and other electronic payments.
