Mexico Banks to Enable User-Set Transfer Limits on Oct. 1 Under CNBV Rule

Customers who do not configure a cap will receive a default limit of 1,500 UDIS—about 12,800 pesos—that can restrict outgoing transfers.

Overview

  • Banks must surface the MTU control in apps and online banking by October 1, with some platforms already prompting users to set their limit.
  • There are no monetary fines for skipping setup, but larger transfers may be blocked or require extra verification under the automatic cap.
  • Transactions that exceed the configured MTU can be stopped or proceed only after additional authentication, and editing limits requires passwords or biometrics.
  • Users can tailor per-operation, daily or monthly caps, with quick setup paths now live in major apps such as BBVA, HSBC, Banorte and Santander.
  • The regime becomes mandatory on January 1, 2026, when institutions will assign the limit to any account that has not defined one.
