Mexico Auto Output Drops in November as Industry Seeks Trade Clarity

Automakers plan a cautious first half of 2026 to await decisions on U.S. Section 232 duties.

Overview

  • In November, Mexico assembled 322,205 light vehicles, down 8.4% year over year, and exported 279,342 units, with the United States taking 78.6% of shipments, INEGI reported.
  • Year to date through November, light-vehicle production slipped 1.46% to about 3.71 million units and exports fell 1.6% to roughly 3.16 million.
  • Heavy vehicles also weakened in November, with production down about 28% to 13,108 units and exports down 21.9% to 10,367, according to INEGI and ANPACT.
  • Industry groups and analysts cited softer U.S. demand, tariff uncertainty and semiconductor shortages—linked in reports to Nexperia disruptions—as key drivers of the monthly declines.
  • AMIA backed Mexico’s proposed tariff on finished vehicles from countries without trade deals but cautioned it will not quickly reignite investment, while prioritizing removal of U.S. Section 232 charges and protection of T‑MEC market access.
