Mexico Announces National High-Performance Computing and AI Cluster

The government framed the pact as a step toward greater technological sovereignty, aligning the effort with the Coatlicue supercomputer as it moves into planning and implementation.

Overview

  • A Carta de Intención signed June 18–19 by the Secretaría de Ciencia, Humanidades, Tecnología e Innovación (Secihti) and the Agencia de Transformación Digital y Telecomunicaciones (ATDT) formally launched the initiative and named Héctor Benítez Pérez of UNAM as project coordinator.
  • The network brings together eight university and public-research nodes, including UNAM, UAM, Cinvestav, BUAP, UdeG, Unison, IPICYT, CICESE and CIMAT, to share high-performance computing (HPC) and AI resources.
  • Officials set four implementation pillars—governance and ethics; telecommunications and cybersecurity; processing and storage; and research and linkage—to guide technical deployment and user access.
  • Next steps move from agreement to delivery: the parties will develop governance rules, upgrade connectivity, install or interconnect nodes, and create training programs, while funding levels, timelines and access criteria remain to be finalized.
  • The cluster is presented as a way to broaden researcher access, train specialists, and strengthen domestic capacity for large-scale projects in health, climate and food security while complementing the national Coatlicue supercomputer.
