Mexico and Honduras Launch Second Phase of Social Programs, Deepen Migration and Energy Cooperation

The visit produced concrete follow-through as leaders moved to expand Mexican-backed initiatives in Honduras.

Overview

  • Claudia Sheinbaum and Xiomara Castro met on November 25 at Mexico’s National Palace and reaffirmed a broad bilateral agenda.
  • More than 20,000 Hondurans benefited from the first phase of Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro and Sembrando Vida, and a new phase was announced to expand youth job training and sustainable rural development.
  • They agreed to pursue follow-up on Mexico-led regional migration efforts from the 2023 Palenque summit and the January 2024 meeting on mobility along the northern route, underscoring protection of their nationals abroad.
  • The leaders highlighted ongoing energy collaboration with Pemex, the Mexican Institute of Petroleum, CFE and Conuee, with plans for continued technical exchange and technology transfer to modernize systems.
  • On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, both reaffirmed commitments to end gender-based violence; Sheinbaum reiterated non-intervention principles as Castro said Sunday’s Honduran election would be free and constitutional, and a cultural review of a Francisco Morazán photograph remains underway.
