Mexico and Argentina Issue Weather Alerts for Heavy Rains, Extreme Heat and Zonda Winds

Monsoon-driven systems in Mexico coincide with a spring warm-up in Argentina with a Zonda episode in Mendoza.

Overview

  • Mexico’s national weather service forecasts intense rainfall of 75–150 mm in Tamaulipas, Nayarit and Jalisco, with thunderstorms, hail and strong gusts across multiple regions today.
  • For the Valley of Mexico, the outlook calls for 5–25 mm in Mexico City and 25–50 mm in parts of Estado de México with electrical activity, gusty winds and possible hail.
  • Pockets of extreme heat of 40–45 °C are expected in parts of Baja California, Sonora and Sinaloa, alongside 40–60 km/h winds in several states and 1–2 m surf on Pacific coasts.
  • Argentina maintains a yellow alert for storms in Misiones, Corrientes, Chaco and Formosa, with possible hail, strong wind and localized rainfall totals of 30–60 mm.
  • Mendoza enters a Zonda event from Monday to Wednesday with gusts near 45 km/h and highs around 24 °C in the plains, while other provinces see a warm, mostly dry week with peaks near 30 °C.
