Overview
- Mexico’s 23rd Collegiate Administrative Tribunal ruled Calica may access the site only to remediate, compensate and restore the exploited area under Semarnat supervision.
- A judge denied the company’s requested suspension in its amparo, leaving extraction halted at the open-pit limestone mine in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.
- The restoration plan must include a project-wide program, wildlife corridor recovery, reforestation and a defined schedule, as specified in the original 2000 environmental permit.
- Semarnat cites expert evidence that Calica extracted roughly twice the authorized volume and lacked required water concessions and a forest permit, after filing more than 50 suits since 2022 without securing approval to keep mining.
- Calica, a unit of U.S.-based Vulcan Materials, continues an international claim against Mexico, while the government prepares a counterclaim and pursues talks to buy the mine and the Punta Venado port for alternative uses.
