Mexican Tanker Begins Fuel Unloading in Havana to Ease Cuba's Power Crisis

The delivery covers little more than a day of the island’s fuel shortfall.

Overview

  • The Liberian-flagged Ocean Mariner arrived in Havana on Jan. 9–10 and is discharging about 86,000 barrels at the Ñico López refinery in Regla.
  • The shipment left Pemex’s Pajaritos complex in December, according to confirmations cited by EFE and the University of Texas Energy Institute.
  • Ocean Mariner is one of two recent Mexican vessels sent to Cuba, alongside the Eugenia Gas.
  • Cuba needs around 110,000 barrels per day for basic energy demand, produces about 40,000 domestically, and imports most of the remainder for electricity generation.
  • Prolonged blackouts and repeated grid collapses persist as Venezuelan supplies decline and U.S. enforcement and policy statements create added uncertainty for future fuel access.
