Mexican Court Sentences Four Zetas to 150–175 Years in San Fernando Kidnappings Case

The rulings follow a yearslong FGR investigation that linked the group to the 2010 San Fernando migrant massacre.

Overview

  • Juzgado Noveno de Distrito in Coyotepec, Oaxaca imposed 175-year terms on Ricardo Román Palomo Rincones, known as El Coyote, and José Heder Ruíz Balero.
  • Lorenzo Reyes and Juan Francisco Robles Martínez were sentenced to 150 years in the same case.
  • The convictions were for illegal deprivation of liberty in the modality of kidnapping against eight victims in Tamaulipas in 2010.
  • SEDENA detained the four men in 2013 at a property in the Santa Regina neighborhood of Ciudad Victoria before they were placed under federal jurisdiction.
  • FGR’s organized-crime unit FEMDO, coordinated with the FECOR office in Oaxaca, presented the evidence, extending a series of San Fernando-related prosecutions that earlier this year also produced sentences for figures including Martín Omar Estrada, El Kilo.
