Mets Select Guillo Zuniga
The move gives New York a big-armed relief option that pairs high velocity with persistent control concerns.
Overview
- The Mets officially selected right-hander Guillo Zuniga’s contract and opened a roster spot by optioning reliever Joey Gerber to Triple-A.
- Zuniga signed with the Mets in May after his release from the Mariners and owns 19 2/3 major-league innings with a 5.03 ERA from 2023–24.
- This season he posted a strong short run at Double-A Binghamton with 12 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings and a 1.93 ERA before a 4 1/3-inning trial at Triple-A Syracuse that included five walks.
- He features a four-seam fastball, sinker, slider and changeup with current fastball/sinker readings in the 93–96 mph range, which are below his earlier triple-digit velocity.
- The club will now decide whether Zuniga pitches in New York right away or returns to Triple-A as his walk rates and small recent sample are weighed against his upside.
