Mets Reinstate Francisco Alvarez, Designate Tomás Nido for Assignment

Alvarez returns from thumb surgery as Luis Torrens secures backup catcher role.

Alvarez had been out since April 19 due to a torn ligament in his left thumb.
He played rehab games with High-A Brooklyn and Triple-A Syracuse before rejoining the Mets.
Tomás Nido, drafted by the Mets in 2012, was designated for assignment to make room for Alvarez.
Luis Torrens, acquired last month, will continue as the backup catcher.
Alvarez was hitting .236 with one home run and eight RBIs before his injury.
